Mary Christie

It is with sadness that the Wellington Shetland Society reports that one of its stalwart members,  Mary Christie, died suddenly on the 3rd of September 2007.  Born in Shetland, in January 1930, Mary and her husband moved to New Zealand in the early 1950s and set the trend for the rest of the family to emigrate to New Zealand over the next few years. Mary was one of those people who loved becoming involved and she took part in society activities with gusto being president of the society for many years and continuing on with a mentoring role as immediate past president  right up to her death. Mary played an important part in keeping the society active at a time when many other ethnic societies were finding it difficult to keep afloat. Mary was also very involved with the local community in the suburb of Brooklyn where she worked in the local post office until retirement and must have been on first name terms with just about everyone in the suburb.  Mary's wise counsel and enthusiasm will be sadly missed by the society and her friends.
